Hoboken High School Set to Have In Person Graduation - July 8th at JFK Field/ Graduating Class Declines -42% from a Decade Ago

Demarest Senior Prom (HHS)- Circa 1954
The Hoboken Reporter is stating that The Hoboken High School graduation is set for July 8 on JFK field.

Having missed their senior prom and a senior class trip, the graduating class of 2020 at Hoboken High School will get one high school rite of passage: an in-person graduation ceremony.

Hoboken students have been learning from home since March as the COVID-19 virus spread across the state infecting more than 18,744 Hudson County residents and causing more than 1,262 county fatalities.

The New Jersey governor has increased outdoor capacity restrictions, but all guidelines such as social distancing will be enforced.

Little Hoboken Photography has offered free prom photo shoots and pictures to download.

According to district administrators, there are only 87 seniors graduating Hoboken High School. This represents a -42% decline from the 149 seniors of a decade ago (see Figure 1). Such a decline runs counter to district claims of "increasing enrollment" and the need for an unprecedented 9.95% tax increase for 2020-21.

Race and the Hoboken Board of Education: Watch Black Parents and the Public Speak About Race Issues and Violence in the Hoboken Public Schools

More and more people are not buying into the district narrative that "everything is wonderful" in the Hoboken School district and are beginning to speak out about institutional racism in the Hoboken District, how black students are being treated and corresponding low expectations placed upon them, the high per pupil spending and low test scores and rankings, sexual assaults and rape culture in the Hoboken Public Schools as well as unresponsiveness of the Board on transparency concerning student safety.

Resta (1st), STEM in the Technopolis: The power of STEM education in regional technology policy. New York City, NY: Springer.

Abstract As federal and state policies continue to emphasize the need for STEM Education reform, it is important to understand how a collaboration between industry, academia, governments, nonprofits, and K-12 schools, can bolster this effort. However, any worthwhile attempts at this must arguably first be steeped in an understanding of the STEM Education movement as well as the deep lineage of learning theories which underscore what has now come to be understood as evidence-based best practices in bolstering STEM teaching and learning. As such, the ensuing chapter recounts a brief history of the STEM Education movement, discussing the impact of pivotal documents, such as A Nation at Risk, which fanned the flames of education reform. It then presents the various perspectives as to what “STEM Education” means, focusing on the separated perspective versus the inte- grated perspective. This is followed by a synopsis of major learning theories and paradigms, such as behaviorism, constructivism, social constructivism, and constructionism, which have informed and continue to underscore education research. Finally, the chapter concludes with a thick description of authentic, situated inquiry- based pedagogies like Problem- and Project-Based Learning, as well as their potential to foster connections and partnerships between industry clusters and K-12 schools.

Hoboken Police Chief Kenneth Ferrante issued his own statement Wednesday night, saying, “My command staff and I have worked around the clock since last Friday to ensure that we have a peaceful protest and peaceful day in Hoboken. The burden of the responsibility on me is to ensure that I direct our officers and the other agencies who will be assisting, to make certain we maintain a peaceful march. While we are prepared to work with the organizers for the duration of the event, we are also prepared to attempt to prevent or respond to any negative situation that comes our way.

Hoboken’s HoLa School Designated a Model Dual Language Program for 4th Time in a Row

Hola's First Full Graduating Class
The Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) was designated a Model Dual Language Program by the New Jersey Department of Education after a rigorous application process. It is the 4th consecutive award of the 2-year designation for HoLa. HoLa is the only charter school this year to win the designation.

The NJ DOE’s application process for the designation includes a full-day site visit with interviews with students, parents, teachers, and administrators.

HoLa’s immersion program means that students starting in Kindergarten spend almost their entire day learning in Spanish, even though the majority of the school’s students do not have any Spanish-language background. The program transitions to a 50 percent Spanish, 50 percent English curriculum by middle school. Students graduate 8th grade with high levels of Spanish proficiency.

HoLa is also working with the City of Hoboken during the pandemic crisis, partnering with the City to have members of the school community call vulnerable Spanish speaking seniors to ensure they have all the information and resources they need.

Note: The Hola Dual Language Program was originally designed for the Hoboken Public School system but the program was rejected by the 2009 reform Hoboken Board of Education by a contentious 4-3 vote in April of 2009. Since then, HoLa has gone on to be a model program for the rest of the state and country.  During the same period, the Hoboken Public Schools under the leadership of the Hoboken Board of Education continues to be among the worst performing public school districts in the country

A Message from the Hoboken High School Graduating Class of 2020

Congratulations to the Hoboken High School Class of 2020. My parents were graduates of Hoboken High School (then Demarest HS) in 1954 and I have had many cousins and friends graduate from Hoboken High. As some people know, I was a teacher at Hoboken High School early in my career and I can attest that the students from Hoboken High have always had great spirt and determination and a love for the City of Hoboken.

The Class of 2020 has faced particular challenges and issues and the video they created celebrates their grit, determination, and love to their community and for each other.

Congratulations to the Class of 2020
