Abandoned, Neglected, or Forgotten?- Saturday U Program for Hoboken's Gifted and Talented Middle Schoolers

During the 2008-2009 academic year, the redesigned and expanded Saturday U Program for gifted and talented Hoboken middle schoolers began on January 17, 2009 and serviced over 125 students. There was also a mid week version of Saturday U to accommodate students involved with weekend sports and activities. To date, Saturday U 2009-2010 has not begun and information has not been forthcoming as to whether it has been phased out due to cost cutting or simply not a priority of the Board of Education majority. Last year's redesigned and expanded Saturday U program was enthusiastically received by students, parents, and associated faculty (a survey was given). The Saturday U Program has been a part of the gifted and talented program in Hoboken for well over a decade. The program's apparent disappearance without public discussion, debate, or a proposal of an alternative program by the Kids First Board of Education majority has left many citizens, parents and children understandably uninformed and disappointed.
