NJ Appellate Court Reaches Decision on Hola Expansion
June 29, 2017: The NJ Appellate Court unanimously rejected all of the Hoboken Board of Education’s claims against HoLa’s expansion in an important decision that ends two and a half years of costly litigation.
“Hola provides quality education to a cross section of Hoboken’s children,” the Judges stated in affirming the NJ Department Education’s 2015 decision to approve HoLa’s expansion to 8th grade. “As a dual-language school, HoLa allows students to become bilingual in a curriculum with a multi-cultural content, and thus advances public policy goals.”
The court found no evidence of economic or racial segregative impact or an adverse funding impact to the Hoboken district.

NJDOE and Patch.com Release Latest Median Teacher Salary Numbers Across All New Jersey Public School Districts
Church Square Park- Hoboken, NJ 2017 |
When comparing traditional pubic and charter school districts it is important to keep in mind that charter districts are a more recent educational phenomena in NJ and consequently teachers in charter schools generally have less years of teaching- and since most salary guides follow number of years teaching- this skews charter district salaries generally lower. Years teaching combined with relatively low teacher attrition in traditional NJ pubic school districts compared to the rest of the country, and number of steps to maximum salary explains a fair amount of the variance.

*It is important to note that median is not an average. Median is the number which splits the dataset into half. Therefore, there are just as many people ABOVE the median as there are BELOW the median. The median is often a better statistic to look for since a few highly skewed salaries can over influence an “average” but has much less effect on the “median.”

Congratulations to HoLa's First Graduating Class- June 19, 2017
HoLa Class of 2017- Hoboken, NJ |
The Hoboken Dual Language Charter School (HoLa) is an exciting dual language charter school that opened its doors to students in grades K-2 in September 2010. Since that time, the school expanded a grade each year until the school reached the 8th grade in 2016-17. HoLa offers a traditional core curriculum through instruction in both Spanish and English to children of all language backgrounds. The program utilizes the well-established immersion approach to dual language education with a range of opportunities for creative expression and experiential learning. Students will become bilingual and biliterate in a culturally diverse and nurturing environment. All families are welcome; no previous exposure to a second language required! Charter schools are free public schools that are publicly funded and operated independently of local school districts.
HoLa began as an effort to merge solid academic and learning theory research with an awareness of what the Hoboken community was demanding back in 2008-09. Through the efforts of many people and broad community support, the HoLa Dual Language Charter School is now known statewide and throughout the northeast region of the nation for excellence in dual language instruction.
Congratulations to the Class of 2017!-- and cheers to the parents, relatives, teachers, staff and administrators that make HoLa the special place that it is-- well done!

Funeral Services For Rev Michael Guglielmelli and sisters Dolores Guglielmelli and Antoinette Gallina - June 15, 2017

Three hearses waited outside the church, on Father Michael Guglielmelli Way, for the caskets of 81-year-old the Rev. Michael Guglielmelli, 87-year-old Dolores Guglielmelli and 85-year-old Antoinette Gallina.
Guglielmelli and Dolores Guglielmelli died the night of the June 4 crash. Gallina died five days after the van they were riding in was rear-ended in Freehold by a pickup truck driven by Austin Janowski, 19, of Freehold, who was treated for an arm injury, officials said.
The former pastor and his sisters, who grew up in Hoboken, had been living together in Cliffside Park.

participatory and socially-supported approaches to classroom learning, using authentic STEM practices in group-centered learning environments. The work is of particular importance to those who prepare pre-service teachers for the classroom, because most programs don’t use this type of approach in teacher preparation. As part of the project I was invited recently to NYC for an NSF workshop on computer science and Colleges of Education. Here is a little write up on that meeting. -Dr. Petrosino

A few doctoral students and myself will be undertaking some new research in the area of early childhood education in the area of scientific and engineering practices. This is some exciting research and has some potential to really inform some developmental perspectives on young children and participatory practices in STEM. The text below is from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) sanctioning the study for various safety and compliance issues. -Dr. Petrosino

Fr. Michael Guglielmelli (1936-2017)
Fr. Michael Guglielmelli ("Father Mike") and his sister Dora were tragically killed in a car accident last night in Freehold, NJ. His other sister and niece were also injured and in need of everyone's prayers as they are still in the hospital.
It is very difficult to put into words what Fr. Mike meant to not only his parish of St. Francis but what he meant to those who knew him and came into contact with him. An old fashioned parish priest- Fr. Mike was from the neighborhood and was a vital and vibrant member of the community for his entire life. His homilies were living parables-- he would combine personal stories with Italian phrases, insights, and spiritual meaning. He was loved and he will be missed.
Statement from St. Francis Church:
“It is with deep regret that the Church of St Francis of Assisi, Hoboken, announces the passing of our beloved former Pastor, Fr Michael Guglielmelli. Fr Michael served our parish and the city of Hoboken with love and compassion. He taught us the meaning of caring for those who are less fortunate and how to care for one another in the true spirit of St Francis. At this time, we ask for your prayers for Fr Michael and his family. For those who wish, the Church will be open until 9 p.m. this evening for anyone desiring to stop and offer a prayer.”
All services forRev. Michael V. Guglielmelli
and
Miss. Dolores Guglielmelli

No Kid Hungry- If You Know a Child Who Will Miss Meals This Summer Due to Summer Vacation from School
With summer recess from school upon us, some children who rely on school lunch and breakfast programs may be in a situation where they miss one or more meals during the day. If you know about a school-age student who will be in need of breakfast and lunch over summer vacation, text "FOOD" to 877877 and you'll receive a message indicating where they can go to get free summer meals. Thanks to my friend and colleague Kay Randall for informing me about this program. -Dr. Petrosino
This is a nationwide program - if you want to repost, it should work for anybody, anywhere.
This is a real phone number, a real program, and an accurate message. The text information service is run by No Kid Hungry, an initiative of the non-profit organization Share Our Strength.
No Kid Hungry has access to information about tens of thousands of groups serving free meals nationwide as part of the the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program.
Once the free meal providers register with the USDA, No Kid Hungry makes their location and hours available to the public via the 877-877 number. To use the service, text “FOOD” to 877-877 and enter your zip code when prompted. Spanish-speakers can also text “COMIDA” to 877-877.
You can also locate registered, licensed free meal providers using this interactive map on the USDA website.
Unfortunately, your nearest free meal provider may not be in your town. This is because, by law, sites are only allowed in areas where 50% of schoolchildren or more are eligible for free or low-cost school meals, according to the USDA. You can check whether your local area is eligible to host a Summer Food Service Program site, using this map.
